Those are florescent light tubes. They're pressurized, so they break VERY easily, and since they're pressurized, they explode when broken, making the gl**** break into very small, usually harmless pieces. Me and a friend of mine used to have "sword" fights with these until we found out they allegedly contained chemicals known to cause cancer. Ahhhhh, the bliss that is the ignorance of childhood.
